Green for Clean – 2/2

October 1, 2009 -- Filed under Clean Diesel, Saving money by Andrew Macdonald

A previous post talked about Volkswagen’s decision to offer $1,000 cash on the 2009 Jetta TDI Clean Diesel.

A second and less recognized facet of the newly announced program is the requirement for the customer to be Retire your Ride eligible.

Why should this matter?

Fact 2. Customers must be Retire Your Ride eligible

The “why recycle?” section of the Retire Your Ride website suggests that “Cars are the most complex, mass-produced recycled product on the planet. Did you know that 75% of an average car’s content by weight can be recycled? This means it is extremely important that vehicles are recycled responsibly.”

The Automotive Recyclers of Canada
(ARC) and the Government of Canada have crafted a mandatory National Code of Practice for automotive recyclers participating in Retire Your Ride. The Code has three goals:
•    To convey the legal and mandatory requirements before, during, and after the recycling process;
•    To summarize best management practices; and
•    To ensure that there is a consistent set of practices that are aligned, as much as possible, with federal, provincial, and municipal laws and regulations.

Green for Clean customers can be assured their old vehicle will be recycled to an accredited standard including consideration for everything from tires to hazardous mercury switches and toxic fluids. Here is a car shredder eating a vehicle in 36 seconds. Removing the nasty stuff first is probably a good idea.
