The TDI Cup: powered by SynDiesel

August 26, 2009 -- Filed under Clean Diesel, Technology by Louis-Alain Richard

In 2008, Volkswagen introduced the TDI Cup, a one-design racing series (where all racing cars are identical) featuring almost standard Jetta TDIs specially prepared for racing.

I wrote about it in this blog.

This year, the series is back and takes the action to the Mosport in Ontario during the weekend of August 29 and 30.

For those who are visually inclined, here’s a short clip of the 2008 race in Limerock:

As I mentioned in the preceding blog, and as the video demonstrates, the race is a tight one, given that the cars are identical and that the racers are all young go-getters determined to win.

This year, the cars will be powered by SynDiesel B5 biodiesel. This fuel is 5% biodiesel (made from vegetable oils) and 95% regular synthetic fuel that’s available at the pump. According to the people at SynDiesel, the fuel produces up to 20% more horsepower than ordinary fuel. Interesting.

Maybe this fuel is the modern equivalent of super, the red gas of the 60s and 70s. I’ll elaborate in a future blog.

According to the racers, the Jetta TDIs can run four races on a full tank of SynDiesel. This means the whole racing season will require less than two tanks in all.
