The 2009 Commuter Challenge

June 18, 2009 -- Filed under Economy, My impact by Andrew Macdonald

Have you taken the Commuter Challenge? Last year, 31,826 Canucks rose to the occasion when challenged to find alternatives to driving alone to work for a week. The Commuter Challenge is held annually during Canadian Environment Week, the first week of June.

The challenge is not unique to Canada. Virtually every nation on the planet celebrates a commuter day during which personal mobility options are encouraged and supported through awareness and education. The day is always about changing our patterns and habits. Instead of driving as a single occupant, seek out someone to car pool with. Is transit an option? What about biking or walking to go on those errands?

The results of the 2009 Commuter Challenge are in and the winner is … Calgary. National participation was up over 30% from 2008. Way to go, Canada!
