Overview of the 2010 Golf, the 6th generation of the popular compact.

With every new version, it’s always the same story: the reviewers seem to think that the changes are too reserved from a stylistic point of view, whether it’s the Golf or the Rabbit. It won’t be any different for the 2010 Golf, especially given that the 6th generation still uses certain elements of its forerunner’s body (roof, glass surfaces, floor).

And yet, every year, the Golf is among the most popular cars in the world, i.e. 26 million vehicles sold since 1974, including 400,000 since 1975 in Canada. Is it that buyers are more practical than reviewers?

Next fall, the Golf VI will make its début in Canada, a year after being introduced in Europe. It will come equipped with the Jetta’s 5-cylinder, 170 horsepower gas engine, its 140 hp turbocharged diesel engine, or its 200 hp turbocharged gas engine. With this last engine, the car will be known as the Golf GTI, just like it used to be. The GTI will therefore no longer be considered a distinct model. Manual transmission will still be 6-speed, and the DSG automatic will be optional.

The style of the car’s front borrows from the first Golfs (Mk 1 and Mk 2), with a black horizontal grille between the headlights. The taillights are similar to those on the Touareg, and the clean lines are typical of the Golf with their striking third side pillar. The car is the same length, but it’s 27 mm wider. Innovations include a quieter ride (special glass, redesigned exterior rearview mirrors) and a more cheerful interior.

A few pictures of the Golf VI:

The Golf VI will come in three versions: the usual hatchbacks with three or five doors, and a new Wagon that follows in the footsteps of the Jetta Wagon.

As far as the ride goes, there’s not much change. However, given that the earlier version already offered incredible road handling and driving comfort, this is hardly a flaw. Typical German responsiveness will always be offered, as will quality seats that are designed for the long haul.

The 2010 Golf will arrive at Canadian dealerships in the fall of 2009, and TDI versions will follow in early 2010.
