Hi Normand,

Sounds like you are in fact a fellow montrealer….

I have leased a Passat TDI for last 4 years…..it is my first VW after a string of Japanese cars for the last many years in our 2 car family.

I had a soft spot in my heart for TDI for a long time….but had had a bad expereince with a used Passat wagon (1st automatic Passat in Canada circa the early 90′s)…

Back around spring 2005, when reg gas went over a buck, I bit the bullet and went TDI.

The car has been a pleasure to drive, no real problems, and I often gloated to friends how 850-900kms /tank was standard for me with mixed driving in all-season tires…..

I am now at end of lease, and am considering the new Jetta TDI, and wanted to find out about the Eco Credit program from the Fed gov’t.

To my dismay, it was only for 2 years, and has now ended – just before I would have qualified……

In the US, they are still promoting green or economical cars with a similar program.

The gov’t simply let this die a quiet death…

VW and other manufacturers should start a lobby / movement to re-institute the credit, and possibly make it permanent…..

We should all be encouraged to write to our MP’s and MNA’s !!

Perhaps a program that gives something on acquisition (like the old credit), and even something ongoing as an incentive….

What do you think ??

Further….

The link for the info on the ecoAUTO grant/ Tax Credit whatever it was :

I called up Transport Canada, and they gave me the standard…sorry it was only 2 year program…no idea if another program coming…write your MP….

I sent the following to my MP.

Dear Mr. xxxxxxxx,

I am writing in regards to the ecoAUTO Program which was a 2 year program to encourage people to acquire eco friendly vehicles.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/programs/environment/ecotransport/ecoauto.htm

If the environment, and diminishing world supply of fossil fuels are a long-term problem, why was this program stopped after only 2 years and not extended or made permanent.

It seems like a token attempt to appease when something was in vogue…..

I would like to see the return of a program such as this, to encourage people who are looking at vehicles to make better choices – which will in turn encourage manufactures to move in that direction to address the evolving consumer demand…..thus changing the supply – over time….bringing more fuel-efficient choices to their various line-ups.

Hybrids are one approach…the new technology diesel are another ……alternative renewable fuels, etc……

Bring back the program !!

Tks,
