Looking to the future: A few examples of tomorrow’s ultra-efficient vehicles – Part One: The inline two-seater vehicle

December 4, 2008 -- Filed under Technology by Louis-Alain Richard

On TDI Curious, we try to explore current avenues of responsible mobility, whether it is new fuels, low-consumption vehicles, or alternative forms of individual transportation. Until now, we have focused mainly on popularizing what is happening today, but we haven’t yet covered the extremely interesting subject of low-consumption vehicles, which are certain to show up on roads in the very near future. I have three examples to offer you.

First of all, today we will look at the inline two-seater vehicle, a vehicle whose sole purpose is to comfortably transport 1 or 2 people, all while offering ridiculous consumption. This is a vehicle for whom public transportation is not an option and who need a vehicle to get to work, but who still want to do their part when it comes to responsible mobility.

In the next post, we will discover the reasonable vehicle and finally, in the third post, we will looks at the frugal sports car.

The second is more conventional, but its design favours energy efficiency by eliminating the traditional reserve of excess power, a huge gas guzzler.

And the last one attempts to combine sporty with frugality, reminiscent of those little 1960-era Brits like the Triumph Spitfire or the MG Midget.

These few examples of automotive frugality might make you smile, but I think their arrival is only a matter of time. Ten or 15 years from now, given the recent awareness of environmental problems, we should expect to see more of these low-consumption individual transport vehicles. So what do you think? Which of these “cars of the future” gets your nod?

The inline two-seater vehicle

It was actually a commentary I read in a newspaper that got me thinking on the subject: a guy has to get up at 5:30 in the morning just to find a parking spot in his city’s commuter train parking lot. If he arrives any later, all the spots are gone. The ideal solution would be to get there by bike or scooter, but since we’re living in Canada, that’s not exactly a four-season solution. So then I started dreaming about a sort of covered scooter, a narrow little inline two-seater like the once VW introduced a few years ago under the name “1-Liter“. Then you would be able to fit more vehicles in every parking lot. And with consumption of about 1.0 litre/100 km, even those who have long-distance driving to do would find something to like. The 1-Liter is powered by a tiny 300 cc diesel engine.

This type of vehicle doesn’t exist yet, even if rumours are circulating about a small production run in the near future. Would you buy one? If, of course, prices were comparable to those of a normal vehicle. I can already hear your objections about practicality. But since most families already own two vehicles, its role would simply be to get commuters to work when they are alone in the car. The rest of the time, the other vehicle would handle daily errands.
