High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes

September 14, 2008 -- Filed under My impact by Andrew Macdonald

Normand, let’s not fool ourselves. From my experience these are “low vehicle occupancy lanes”. I see it every day: the HOV or rather LOV is lightly used while the two or three lanes next to it are bumper to bumper with idling and slow-moving traffic.

But I digress… studies in the emissions impact of HOV lanes fall into two categories: continuous and limited. One of the more significant studies is from the Transportation Research Board in the U.S. The Canadian POV can be found here and you will notice that researchers agree that “most HOV systems in the country are meeting their objectives.”

Hmm, maybe next time I am stuck in one of the clogged lanes I will have time to research this further.
